SushiBar in the DOX Restaurant

Düsseldorf

The Medienhafen is Düsseldorf's new architectural flagship. In addition to commercial properties for advertising, art and media professionals, state-of-the-art restaurants, lifestyle bars and top-class hotels have been built in an absolutely prime location. The newly opened Hyatt Regency Hotel is one of the American hotel group's largest investments in Germany in 2010. Located directly on the Rhine, the 5-star luxury hotel attracts overnight guests as well as locals in the know.

In keeping with the spirit of the times, the Hyatt Group wanted to create a Japanese dining experience for its guests alongside various other restaurants. Together with architect Hendrik Fraune from Studio Architects, an unusual sushi bar was planned as the architectural centrepiece of the new DOX restaurant. This is where the sushi masters celebrate their skills and spoil their guests with fresh sushi.

Design

Klumpp Innenausbau from Baiersbronn was commissioned with developing and implementing the bar: It should be round, Japanese clean and ultra-stylish. Michael Klumpp, Managing Director of Klumpp Innenausbau, also secured the support of Corian expert Hasenkopf to make the futuristic counter a reality. Together, Klumpp and Hasenkopf calculated a competitive offer for the implementation and got to work immediately after receiving the order. Hasenkopf was able to provide advice right from the start. The requirement for a really high-gloss surface for the bar was an argument in favour of the Parapan material, but the elaborate shape of the counter was an argument more in favour of Corian. This is because only Corian can be thermally processed to form the complicated curves required. Corian also meets the fire protection requirements in public buildings, which are mandatory in hotels. As Hasenkopf has both the right tools and many years of experience for the necessary polishing work on Corian, after carefully examining all the advantages and disadvantages, the experts finally recommended the mouldable solid surface material.

Implementation

The Industrie-Manufaktur transferred the digital data from the architects' and Klumpp Innenausbau's design directly into its CAD/CAM system. The curves of the snail-shaped bar, which could only be controlled via the computer, differed in most places. Hasenkopf milled over 70 different templates using 5-axis milling machines and thermally formed each of the individual pieces for the 20-meter-long outer shell of the counter. For the final touch, the surface was then fully polished to a high gloss. To support Klumpp Innenausbau, Hasenkopf also helped with the assembly of the bar, gluing the individual parts smoothly and seamlessly and polishing them to a high gloss on site. Since January 2011, the artful sushi bar in the DOX restaurant of the new Hyatt Hotel in Düsseldorf has been shining in all its beauty. Michael Klumpp is satisfied: "We are experienced professionals in the field of interior design. There is practically no project that we cannot solve with our expertise. But when it comes to special areas, such as the thermal shaping and high-gloss polishing of the round bar counter, it's reassuring to know that we can always rely on our partners."
