Hohensalzburg Fortress

Salzburg

The historic “Zeughaus”, which has towered over Salzburg since 1559, was once a storehouse for cannons, armour and small arms. Today, after careful restoration, the impressive vault houses a fascinating museum.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the world of fortress construction and weapons history at eight interactive stations and experience the building’s eventful history. However, it is not only the exhibits, but also the careful design of the museum that contribute to the unique atmosphere.

Design

Clemens Standl from EIDOS was responsible for the exhibition’s architecture, harmoniously adapting the design to the building’s historical architecture. His vision was implemented by the meticulous work of Modl Möbelmanufaktur, which was also responsible for fitting out the adjacent store’s interior. One particular challenge was transporting the large-format furniture to the construction site by helicopter - a first in the company's history.

Implementation

The carefully selected materials contribute to the museum’s special atmosphere: The furniture is clad in Corian from Dupont in the colours Glacier White and Deep Nocturne. Supplier specialist Hasenkopf, whose work was praised by Christian Santer, Managing Director of Modl, ensured that the Corian cladding was perfectly matched to the furniture. The result is a space that honours the past while at the same time helping to shape the future.
